On Leadership: To Empower Others, Empower Yourself

I've come across many entrepreneurs, coaches and consultants over the years. The way to know if they "practice what they preach" or "walk the talk" is through the personal and professional actions they take. For example, if you are a life coach, is your personal life a mess or do you face challenges head-on? How can you tell your clients to commit to certain behaviors if you don't do so yourself? Its like the doctor who promotes healthy eating but regularly binges on candy. You can't "sell" someone what you don't "do" yourself.
Here are some tips for "walking the talk":
1. Be transparent
We all have strengths and weaknesses. Be open about your own. To be credible, display honesty with your team and clients. State how you will overcome challenges and roadblocks when they come up, because they will.
2. Continuously improve yourself
Commit to growth. Learn new skills to overcome obstacles or challenges. Businesses thrive on continuous improvement. What areas do you need to focus on? Time management, communication or delegation? Challenges will occur but what will you do to overcome them?
3. Empower your team
Instead of focusing on all the things they do "wrong," focus on what they do "right." A good leader fosters collaboration, open communication and creativity. It's great to celebrate big and small wins. Focus on solutions to problems. Happy clients begin with happy staff. Bad or unresolved situations will seep into day-to-day business dealings. Be on the alert.
Success in business often lies in the ability to make changes when necessary. This isn't always fun or easy. Start small. By responding to changing environments you become more resilient and effective. To do well, you need to be well. To take care of your team, you need to take care of yourself.
